Bone grafting is a procedure used to correct defects in the jaw by generating and rebuilding bone to increase overall bone density. The procedure may be recommended if you have had:

  • Congenital birth defects that affect your jaw
  • Facial trauma
  • Removal of a tumor
  • Tooth loss and subsequent bone loss as a result

Minor Bone Grafting

Most patients need only minor bone grafting. This procedure is performed to enhance the upper or lower jaw bone, usually in order to increase bone density prior to the placement of dental implants.

If a tooth is lost and not replaced right away, the bone that once held it in place begins to break down. Unfortunately, this may mean a patient is not a candidate for dental implant surgery, as implants need a stable base of support from the jawbone. Bone grafting lets us to reverse bone loss to allow for successful dental implant surgery. Once the bone graft has healed, we will be able to proceed with your implants.

Dr. Cabassa can usually perform minor bone grafting right in our office. The graft may come from your own bone, a donor source, or synthetic material that is designed to stimulate bone growth. Healing time is typically between 4 to 6 months, although it occasionally takes longer.

Major Bone Grafting

When major bone grafting is needed, as with the correction of congenital birth defects, surgery is typically performed in a hospital setting. Grafting material may need to be taken from the skull or hip.
